Class description:

A three-hour review of Fair Housing laws, this seminar will discuss both fundamental and advanced topics – something for everyone, whether you are a long-time industry veteran or brand new to the housing industry.

Topics will include:

  • Review of the federal and SC Fair Housing Acts and their protected classes.
  • Discuss various forms of discrimination, including disparate impact and its evolution.
  • Delve into areas increasingly affected by disparate impact discrimination, including HUD’s evolving guidance on criminal screening rules.
  • Emphasis on two protected classes that currently account for two-thirds of all Fair Housing claims filed: family status and disability discrimination.
  • Emotional support animals (ESAs) and the latest HUD guidance.
  • Quick snapshots of the latest trends in FHA litigation around the country, federal regulations, and developing HUD rules – with a forecast of what may be on the horizon.
  • And as always:  Your questions!

Will Brownlee is an attorney licensed in SC, NC, and GA, and is the co-founder of two law firms serving landlords:  Loebsack & Brownlee, PLLC and Brownlee Whitlow & Praet, PLLC.  Over the course of his career, Will has focused entirely on all aspects of landlord-tenant law, including fair housing defense at the federal, state, and local levels.  In his service to the housing industry, Will has served on state and local apartment association boards, as well as serving as the Executive Director of the Apartment Association of NC (AANC) and serving as the SC/NC consultant to the National Apartment Association (NAA) on its lease forms.  Will was honored by being named to the AANC Hall of Fame in 2019.  In all, Will has served the industry for the last 27 years, though “semi-retiring” in 2018 but continuing to serve as Of Counsel for the two law firms bearing his name.  Born and raised in Charleston, SC, Will is a graduate of The Citadel and still lives in the greater Charleston area. When not appearing in court or teaching, Will loves spending time and traveling to new places with his wife, a retired property manager who leased Will his first apartment, thus beginning Will's love affair with the rental industry.  Beginning and Closing Sponsorships available.
